What On Earth Is

Happening To Me?

Why Widowhood Changes Your Brain, Body and Sense of Self (and why it all makes perfect sense)

Nobody ever warned you that widowhood would feel like this.

You expected the sadness, anger, fear, even the loneliness.

But you didn’t bank on EVERYTHING ELSE that has come your way with the title of ‘widow’.

Nobody told you:

  • You’d lose your train of thought half way through a sentence

  • You’d be standing in the cereal aisle, tears blurring your vision, trying to decide between two boxes of cereal

  • You’d feel totally, utter, bone tired exhausted after doing precisely nothing

  • You’d swing erratically and unpredictably from numb to overwhelmed

  • You’d comfort eat, doom scroll till midnight or pour another glass of wine just to get through another evening

  • You wouldn’t be able to stop crying… or perhaps not be able to cry at all

  • You’d jump out of your skin at the tiniest thing

  • You’d look in the mirror and not recognise the woman looking back

If you’ve ever felt any of these things  (and the million others like it), then you’re not alone.

And you’re certainly not going mad.

(Let’s not even go there with your total lack of tolerance for the school Whatsapp groups these days or how the thought of answering the ‘how are you’ question fills your with dread in the pit of your stomach)

The truth is, nobody ever explained what happens to your brain, body and nervous system after the devastating loss of your partner.

Until now. And if just one of those things made you think ‘that’s me’ then this masterclass is for you.

This Is More Than ‘Just Grief’

When your partner died your entire body, mind and emotions faced an overwhelming threat. Overnight you were taken from a sense of safety, security and knowing your place in the world, to having your world as you knew it shaken from under you.

When the person who made your world feel safe dies, of course your brain starts to look for danger everywhere.

Your brain started responding differently.

Your nervous system adapted.

Your body did what it is designed to do to help you survive the unimaginable.

The problem is that no one tells widows this.

Instead we’re often left feeling like we’re failing, broken or somehow ‘grieving’ wrong.

In this masterclass you’ll finally understand why your body and brain have been responding the way they have, and why everything you’ve been experiencing makes SO much more sense that you realised.

Imagine Leaving This Masterclass With:

  • A completely different understanding of yourself (hello, self-compassion)

  • The relief of knowing there’s nothing wrong with you

  • Language to explain (fiiiinally) what’s been happening to you

  • Two practical tools you can use that very same day

  • Hope that your future doesn’t have to look like your present

Most importantly…

You’ll leave with something many widows tell me they’ve been searching for ever since their person died.

Relief

Relief that you’re not the only one to experience this. Relief that you’re normal. Relief that there are valid reasons for how you feel. And hope that things can begin to look different

Is This For Me?

This Masterclass is for you if:

You’ve lost your husband/partner and part of yourself along with them

You feel stuck, overwhelmed or emotionally exhausted

You’ve tried counselling or read books but still feel that something is missing

You want to understand why you feel the way you do, and not just be told to ‘be kind to yourself’

You’re ready and curious to begin understanding your grief through the lens of your brain, body and nervous system

You don’t need any previous knowledge. Simply come as you are.

Meet Your Host

I distinctly remember having my food shop thrown at me in Aldi, lobbing stuff into bags, wondering why the hell I was there and how the world was still turning. Like, WTAF?!

Hi, I’m Lou Hynes.

The Grief Guide

After my own husband died suddenly I experienced many of things no one had warned me about. Brain fog (or was it perimenopause, or both? Shit!), total bone deep exhaustion, jumping out of my skin, snapping at my children and complete decision- fatigue-life-altering-overwhelm. All alongside being told how strong I was, to ‘give it time’ and that Pete would be ‘so proud of me’. It was all I could do not to punch everyone I met and yet I carried on putting on the mask and fake smile and pretending to the outside world that I was OK, because that’s what we do, right?

As a grief educator, coach and hypnotherapist, along with a growing specialism in trauma informed, nervous system based grief support, I’ve made it my mission to explain what so many widows (all of us?) are experiencing but so few people are talking about.

Because once you understand what’s happening inside you, it all begins to make sense.

You can’t think your way out of survival mode.
